Are there moderate Muslims? Many believe there are and agree not all Muslims are extremist or terrorists.
Many Americans know American Muslims in their communities who are not extremists. They do not abuse women, do not want to live under Sharia law, and are not jihad terrorists.
Nonie Darwish says, “In the Middle East there is nothing like moderate Muslims. They have Muslims and reformist Muslims. Some of them claim to be moderate, because they do not participate directly in different kinds of jihad. They do contribute passively in other ways however.”
Nonie does not believe every Muslim is an extremist or abusive, but she cautions Americans too. She offers,”Some Muslims choose to practice Taqillah which is lying when is needed for the advancement of Islam and to protect themselves.”
When I mentioned that it often appears many on the American left have become Islamist allies, Nonie responded, “At least Socialists and/Communists are not double faced, because they openly advance their agendas, while many Muslim extremists believe in lying to advance the cause of Allah.”
Nonie provides this list of questions to ask to identify moderate Muslims:
- Where do they stand on Israel borders and their right to exist?
- Do they support Iran’s plans against Israel?
- Do they agree that Hamas and Hezbollah are terrorists groups?
- Do they support the Muslim Brotherhood to be in control of the Egyptian government?
- Do they reject killing those who leave Islam or apostates?
- Do they condemn the terrorist attacks of September 11?
- Do they believe in the freedom of individuals to choose reading the Bible, the Koran, or anything about their religious views, or not having religious views of any kind?
- Do they blame American foreign policy for the problems in the Middle East?
- Do they reject Sharia law?
Nonie asks: “Can moderates stop the radical Muslims? Can we count on them and stay quiet?”
She answers, “I don’t think so, and the reason is because moderate intellectuals and feminists in the Muslim world are intimidated, threatened, or killed.”
She cites, “Egyptian journalist reformer, Farag Fouda was gunned down in front of his son in Cairo. Feminists such as Ghada Jamshier in Bahrain are forbidden from writing or speaking to the media. Other Arab feminists have Fatwas of death against them.”
“On March 15/2008, two Saudi writers, Abdullah bin Bejad al-Otaibi and Yousef Aba al-Khail, called for a reconsideration of notion that all non-Muslims are Kafirs. That prompted a top religious figure, Abdul-Rahman al-Barrak, to call for their deaths in a Fatwa against the two.”
She says sadly, “How can we rely on moderate Muslims to save us when they cannot save themselves.”
Nonie Darwish notes, “I see very few American politicians and media figures speak against Sharia, and as a matter of fact some even defend it as nothing to fear.”
She continued, “I plead with all Americans to understand what is at stake. I hope American children will never have to fight Islamist terrorism, Sharia enforcers, and honor killers, door to door and town to town in America.”
“Our children will ask their grandpa and grandma thirty or forty years from now, ‘Why did we allow this to happen in America?’ if we do nothing to stop this dark and totalitarian legal system that will only produce chaos, failure and misery.”
Nonie concludes, “By tolerating intolerance, we are telling the victims of Sharia, go fend for yourselves. Tolerance of Sharia enforcers is no longer a sign of compassion. It is gross negligence.”
